How To 2: Set up your personal my.Hitflip page
Why should you set up your own my.Hitflip page? We give you the option to present yourself on our website with your picture, pseudonym and description. You will be able to add your friends and communicate over pinboards. You can also publish your comments, tags and library, so that other members can see what you are up to.
Step 1) Upload a picture
Why should you upload a picture? With a picture, other users might be more comfortable swapping with you or might want to add you as a friend. In addition your friends will be able to identify you if they do not know your pseudonym. Preferably you should upload a picture of yourself. Some users, however, prefer to upload other pictures which show off an aspect of their personality. Our random users page will give you some ideas. Please note that images that display 18+ rated content will not be accepted.
How do you upload your picture? First of all you have to log in. As soon as you are logged in, you will find your picture at the right hand corner of your browser window:
If you have not uploaded a picture yet it will display our default user picture including the writing ‘upload your picture here‘. In order to upload your image just click on the default picture and you get to a page which lets you select a picture from your hard drive. After selecting the picture you simply click on upload.
Step 2) Selecting your pseudonym
Why use a pseudonym? Because you probably do not want us to show your real name to everyone on our site. That’s why you may choose a screen name which you also can use to login to Hitflip.
You probably already use pseudonym names on other websites. You certainly can use those here too. This would even make it easier for your friends to find you and your offered items on our Website.
How to set your pseudonym? If you are logged in, then you will find a link to my.hitflip in the navigation bar on the right side of the screen.
Just click on the link and you will get to your my.hitflip page. If you have not set your pseudonym before, you will find a request link to do so:
Just click on the link: pseudonym and then choose your favourite screen name. If you want to change your pseudonym at a later point you can do so via the general settings menu.
After you have uploaded your photo and decided your pseudonym, other users will be able to get a much better picture about you. See this example of Julia:
Compare it with the case of the default picture. Julia chose the pseudonym Julia27.
Step 3) Adjust your privacy settings
You can decide which parts of your profile will be visible to other members. If you have not changed your privacy settings you will see the following reminder on your my.Hitflip page.
By clicking on privacy settings you will get to a page where you can adjust the following settings:
We recommend to set all settings to ‘Yes’ in order to increase the likelihood of swapping your media items.
Step 4) Write a description of yourself
You can write a brief description about yourself. You can use this opportunity to tell other users a little bit about you. If people know something about you they might feel more confident about swapping with you. In order to write your description you just have to go to your my.Hitflip page after you have added your image and pseudonym and then click on the link asking you to write your description. Or you could go to your general settings menu and click on Add/edit profile description.
Step 5) Get an overview of your my.Hitflip page
Once you have finished all 3 steps you can view your my.Hitflip page. There you will find your profile data, pinboard, comments, your library items, friends, items reviewed, tags and ratings received. Many of those things will be discussed in later How To posts. In order to get an idea how this can look, just check our Top-Members or see Julia’s page:
Ok, now you know how its done, you can go to set up your own my.Hitflip page right away. Feel free to add Julia to your friends list. In a later blog post we will discuss how to find more friends.
